How to Identify iPad Models

Video_identify_ipad Learn how to identify your iPad's model

Gazelle appraises the value of your iPad by model name, carrier, storage capacity and condition (but we’ll get to that later). Due to the high degree of cosmetic similarities between WiFi and 3G iPads—certain information found on your iPad and in the menu settings require particular attention to ensure the correct identification of your iPad tablet. The easiest way to find your model number and hard drive capacity is either on the lower backside of the tablet or in the menu settings (Settings>General>About). You may also want to record your FCC ID, IMEI number and Serial number for your own personal records.

Once you have your model number, you can use this guide of cosmetic differences to identify your model name:

If your iPad Model Number is A1219 you have an Apple iPad WiFi Original: This iPad features a 9.7” screen with all an aluminum back. A1219 comes in 3 sizes of 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB.

If your iPad Model Number is A1337 you have an Apple iPad Wi-Fi/3G/A-GPS (AT&T): This original iPad with 3G data connectivity features a 9.7” screen with an all aluminum back. Also note on the 3G versions that the back will feature a small black rubber band on the top. Physically, the two devices look nearly identical except for the black band that overlays the top of the back of the iPad 3G. This black plastic strip covers the 3G modem, but also remains flush with the rest of the device. There is also a SIM card slot on the lower left side of the device to store a micro SIM card for data connectivity. iPad model A1337 comes in 3 sizes of 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB.

If your iPad Model number is A1395 you have an Apple iPad 2 Wi-Fi: The iPad 2 brings a slimmer design to the tablet while retaining the same 9.7” screen from the original iPad. Also, the iPad 2 brings a thinner and lighter form factor along with imaging support. The iPad 2 features a small front-facing camera on the top part of the device, as well as a rear-facing camera on the upper back left corner of the device. iPad model A1395 comes is 3 sizes of 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB in both white and black color variations.

If your iPad Model is A1396 you have an Apple iPad 2 Wi-Fi/GSM/A-GPS (AT&T): This 3G version of the iPad 2 brings 3G data connectivity to the tablet for GSM networks. Here in the U.S. the iPad 2’s GSM 3G data works with AT&T. A micro SIM card slot for 3G data access is located on the backside in the upper left corner. As with the original iPad, the iPad 2 3G will feature the same black strip on the top back that covers the 3G modem. iPad model A1396 comes is 3 sizes of 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB in both white and black.

If your iPad Model is A1397 you have an Apple iPad 2 Wi-Fi/CDMA/A-GPS (Verizon): This 3G version of the iPad 2 brings 3G data connectivity to the tablet for CDMA networks. Here in the U.S. the iPad 2’s CDMA 3G data works with Verizon Wireless. As with the original iPad, the iPad 2 3G versions will feature the same black strip on the top back that covers the 3G modem. iPad model A1397 comes is 3 sizes of 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB in both white and black color variations.
